Location summary

Perast

Nestled in the heart of the Bay of Kotor, Perast is a charming Venetian town recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With breathtaking views of the bay and exquisite Dalmatian Baroque architecture, it offers a glimpse into history and beauty. Just 400 meters offshore lie two iconic islands: Saint George, featuring a 12th-century Benedictine Monastery, and “Our Lady of the Rocks,” home to a 17th-century Roman Catholic church.

Kotor

Situated in the southeastern corner of the Bay of Kotor, this historic town of sailors and merchants dates back to the 12th century. Enclosed by the dramatic slopes of Sveti Ivan, Kotor’s old town is a maze of narrow, winding streets brimming with character. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a must-visit destination. For a small fee, visitors can climb approximately 1,350 steps to the fortress, where they’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the bay.

Gulf of Kotor

Widely regarded as the Adriatic coast’s most spectacular natural feature, the Gulf of Kotor is a breathtaking wonder. Comprising Tivat Bay and the Bay of Kotor further inland, its dramatic mountains plunge into crystal-clear blue waters, creating a fjord-like landscape. Dotted along the shoreline are historic towns, offering endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

Travel advice

Money, Additional Expenses, and Tipping
We recommend bringing extra funds to cover items not included in your retreat package, such as meals, drinks, entertainment, and souvenirs. Tipping practices vary by country—while it may not be customary in some places, in others it is expected. Tipping is entirely at your discretion and can be a way to show appreciation for excellent service. Your Superb Retreat Guides will gladly advise you on local tipping norms for service providers, such as boat crew, waitstaff, or taxi drivers. While nothing is expected for your guides, many groups choose to give a token of gratitude at the end of the retreat.

The local currency in Montenegro and Croatia is the Euro (€). There are ATMs available in Perast and nearby towns like Risan (3 km) and Kotor (12 km). However, to avoid withdrawal fees, we suggest bringing a small amount of cash.

Responsible Travel
At Superb Retreats, we are committed to protecting and preserving the natural environments we explore. We strive to minimize our impact on local ecosystems and educate our guests about conservation and responsible tourism. By working with local partners, we ensure our trips are conducted sustainably to support marine life and natural habitats.

Passports and Visas
To enter Montenegro, non-citizens must carry a valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond their stay. Citizens from the E.U., U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not require a visa for visits under 90 days. Visa requirements may change, so we recommend confirming your specific entry requirements before traveling.

Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is essential. Ensure your policy covers illness, accidents, emergency evacuation, lost luggage, and delays. For retreats involving activities like open-water swimming or competitions, verify these are also included. Always read the details of your policy carefully and keep a copy handy during your trip.

Health Information and Vaccinations
Your safety and well-being are our priorities. Some retreat locations are in remote areas where medical facilities may not be readily available. Our guides and local partners are first-aid trained, but we encourage guests to visit our Travel Health page to prepare for general travel and activity-specific health precautions.
